This is such a super cute project!!! My partner (and great friend!) Shea came up with this craft for tonight's Craftacular Tuesday! We will be fashioning stockings out of old pant legs. This project is super cute and requires minimal sewing skills. We will have 2 machines available to use but if you own (or have access to) one then we invite you to bring it too!

Someone called the store earlier who was interetsed in finding out what tonight's craft was. She called it creative therapy and I really thought that was just a perfect description of a Tuesday night at Anomaly!

Tonight is a repeat from a project we originally did back in December. It's a cute neck wrap made from old sweaters.

I know it's still 90 degrees outside in this lovely Florida fall weather, but I have an ulterior motive for doing this project tonight. Tomorrow morning I'm going to be shooting a tutorial for jacksonville.com! It will be airing in October so I wanted to do something that was cute and fallish. I think this is a perfect project because every time I wear mine, I always get loads of compliments, plus it's pretty easy.

I need your crafty help to make examples to show at the end of the segment. I want to show a bunch of different styles and all my crafty crew always comes up with the best twists on the project I present. So, hopefully you can make it tonight and help me out AND make a cool neck warmer.

**IF YOU HAVE A SEWING MACHINE, PLEASE BRING IT! :)** This is an easy sewing project but it does require machine stitching.

fuzzy baby booties

seems like so many people i know are having babies these days... (i for one am not. been there, done that.) i thought a cute little craft this evening would be to make baby booties to adorn all those little tiny feet! the above picture was made using felt and some recycled blanket. very cute, but it got late and i didn't finish. i will complete mine tonight because i'm making this pair for someone in particular. come join us in making a pair!!!

RE:Style old zippers have a new look!

I didn't have too much luck at the flea market today, but what i did get was well worth the trip! i scored a supa sweet shoe box FULL of vintage notions!

One of the many ideas on my "things to make" list happens to be a zipper flower. It was my lucky day because this box was FILLED with zippers! There's quite the assortment. Some fashioned from ivory cotton, yellowed with time and lined thick silver metal zipper teeth. Some are a deep purple and others olive green, or there's the skinny polyester ones circa 1970's and 3 are even still in the package! As if the 15 zippers wasn't enough of a treasure, the box also held 2 packages of unopened needles (just broke my last one on Friday night!), a bunch of ribbed poly cord perfect for handles for tote bags, a few yards of elastic, buttons galore, and other miscellaneous sewing trinkets. I'm not going to even tell you how much I paid for it. You wouldn't believe me anyway.

I have a tremendous appreciation for vintage packaging. A few of the buttons in my stash were still on the original cards. The back of one of the cards caught my eye.

Such a simple little sales pitch means so much more now that when it was printed. Women have really escaped the confines of being a housewife (although if you ARE a housewife and enjoy, there is nothing wrong with that either!) and have risen to great achievement. From being a doctor, supreme court justice, a senator, and even the proprietor of an independent shop, (wink, wink) women have much more credibility in this world than they used to!

That being said, there is part of me that's a little sad. About a month or so ago I was sitting outside the shop enjoying the weather and working on the handstiching of an owl pillow for RAM. 2 elderly ladies were walking past me and one stopped and asked what i was working on. I told her and she replied, "You just don't see that kind of handwork any more. It's so nice to see that." The making of things is quickly becoming a thing of the past. People are so busy with the chaos of life that it's easier to run to Target and pick up some mass produced item than to take the time to craft something by hand. We've got to keep crafting alive! Let's be inspired by ideas and techniques from generations before us and craft in a way that is modern, fun, functional, and of course, CUTE!

I digress... back to my project... I fashioned up a couple flowers this evening and this is what i came up with... Add a bobby pin or pin back and you've got yourself a cute little conversation piece!

summer sewing spectacular project #3: an adorable little bag
a little more challenging than last week's... but i know you can do it!

craftacular tuesdays is so great. each week it gives me the chance to hang out with a diverse group of ladies AND gentlemen. it also forces me to try a new project and challenge myself each week. some weeks, i will admit, i may not give it 100% and the project doesn't turn out as i'd like. and yes, some weeks are better than others, but it's always something different and equally fun! last week's project was a hit! 15 people of all ages and skill levels came out to tackle sewing his/her own reusable sandwich wrapper!

since we're doing our summer sewing series, this week i thought we'd tackle a bag. it's a really simple pattern with a total of 3 pieces: a lining, outer fabric and braided handle. i fashioned it out of vintage fabric (of course!) and then added a fabric flower at the end to jazz mine up a but. we will be focusing more on the construction of the bag, but i had time to jazz mine up a bit with a vintage flower made out of the bag scraps. the options are endless as to the adornments you could add to give your purse more personality! this is the part where you can let your creativity run wild. and don't say you don't have any, i don't buy it.

it's hard to get a good visual of size in the image above, however i made it small. the actual purse pouch measures a little larger than 4x6 and a dainty ribbon (i used vintage lace. i'm in love vintage lace.) closure ties at the top to keep all your items tucked safely inside. this is the perfect size for just an evening with just a few necessities.

i know say this without it ever coming to fruition, but i am really hoping to get a tutorial together for this project. i took all the step by step pictures while i was putting the bag together AND they are already uploaded to my computer so here's hoping it will happen!

*just had to mention that we are doing an amazing craft that my friend torrey told me about in a couple of weeks... her friend did it at a craft night in NYC... it was $65 for the class and $25 for supplies. i was floored! don't worry, you will never find those kind of prices at anomaly!

summer sewing spectacular project #2: sew a reusable sandwich wrapper

this tuesday we're stitching up some cuteness in the form of a ultra stylish yet practical wrapper to take a sandwich on the go, while being waste free at the same time! check out the impact you can have on making your lunch waste free here. just think how much trash is created every day during lunch time!

the pattern for this is very simple and perfect for sewing 101! we will be using vintage fabric for the outer layer and lining it with oilcloth or vinyl (i will have an assortment of choices!) of your choice. you will love this handy little thing! it will not only keep your bread fresh and be easy to wash/wipe off, but it's also great because when it opens up it turns into the perfect placemat. i already have one of these wraps for my son but am excited to have a second to put to use. i take my son to the zoo and beach weekly and we always take a picnic lunch. (jacksonville zoo = great, jacksonville zoo food choices for vegetarians = sucky) this will be perfect for our sandwiches or to stash the pita wedges for our hummus!

the big winner, rosette earrings, technical difficulties and a special field trip

sadly my computer is officially out of commission. it really sucks because I have no extra funds right now to purchase a new one. i'm so sad about my computer and it doubley sucks because I'm posting this from my iPod touch so I have no way to post new pictures or link to anything. boohoo.

this week for craftacular Tuesdays we are mixing things up a bit! the craft of the night is short but sweet. we are making painted rosette earrings. then while our project is drying, we are going to take a short 10 minute walk to the cummer museum (its FREE on tuesday nights!) to check out an exhibit that any good crafter won't want to miss... the gee's bend quilt exhibit. these quilts are all handsewn by women of gee's bend, Alabama, dating back to slave times. they were pieced together with scraps and recycled fabrics and ijust can't wait to see them on display!

make a rad rag wreath!

for the past few months as i walk in my front door and look at the 4.99 target clearance wreath hanging in my face, it doesn't make me happy. i'm not saying there is anything wrong with the wreath... it was good during it's prime. it's just lost it's luster and been worn by the elements. i was ready for something fresh, new and colorful to take it's place on my front porch.

today i decided to tackle this project. i had a bunch of scraps hanging around my craft cave, as well as some cool vintage trims i've picked up in my adventures in thrifting. voila... a bright and happy wreath perfect to cheer a dreary day.

i have a site on etsy now with my friend nicole (and hopefully other duval crafters in the future!). she does amazing creature paintings and is selling them on etsy. i have some of my collage pieces and am also adding some super cool vintage finds that i have been collecting.

in my adventures on sunday i came across this gorgeous piece! don't hold your breath, this one isn't getting listed on etsy... i can't part with it! this vintage french floral gravy boat caught my eye not because of the stamp on the bottom (i didn't notice that till later...) but for the exquisite blue rose print on the ceramic, the way the handle curves so delicately and the soft ruffled edge around the base, among other things. it was so perfect and totally love at first sight. i knew if i didn't get it, i would be thinking about how i lost it for the rest of my life. i hate living a life filled with what-if's, so i knew it was going home with me long before i knew it's worth!

i also fell in love with a vintage perfume bottle and a turn of the century silk pillow with vintage brass safety pins but didn't want to spend $30 and $50 (respectively) on those. at least i have good taste... ha ha. i am still lusting after that bottle though. it was only a couple inches tall but the label and the detail on the bottle were perfection.

after a little research on the gravy boat i did purchase, it turns out it's a

WH Grindley & Co. circa 1891-1914

i couldn't figure out what pattern it was, but i found some patterns from the 1940's that were worth $125 and up! i have no idea what this one could be worth. if anyone knows about vintage china, i would love some input on this. i will research the stamp more when i can. for now i will just use this piece for it's perfect french turn of the century perfection. for now, i'm going to use it as a planter. baby succulents that need to be replanted.

i'll keep you posted on the perfume bottle. maybe we will cross paths again. all you have to do is believe in a little kismet.

hands off my wine (cozy)!

Toss out those old wine charms (or better yet recycle them into a new craft!) and dress up your wine glasses with pretty cozies! We will be crafting these cozies out of recycled sweaters, so if you have a specific color you'd like to use, bring your own! As always, we will have all the supplies you need to make your project! And, if you aren't a wine drinker you will have the option to make a cute coffee cozy (a craft from a previous week).

it has been quite a mission this evening getting my computer up and running and downloading the pictures. something is wrong with the internal part of my charger AND it's running insanely slowly. there must be some serious viruses on here. urgh. so frustrating. more than anything, i hate low productivity. i don't have time to waste sitting here waiting for my computer to load for ALMOST AN HOUR!!! (no, seriously.)

now that i've gotten that out of my system, let me introduce you to this weeks project. i've been saving glass jars for a little while and i've gathered quite a collection of different shapes and sizes. we will be using etching cream to frost the glass and spray paint to paint the lid. (mine was green!) not only is this is a super easy project but it turns out looking store bought. it's simple and modern.

i decided to adorn an old salsa jar with "treat" because it's the perfect size to stash some candy to satisfy my nightly sweet tooth. mmm... smarties... start brainstorming about something you need a container for. buttons? needles? sharks teeth? wishes?

a perfect springtime planter!

if you missed last night, you missed a really great project! it was a perfect night for crafting outside and all the cans turned out great!

it's spring (though some may argue that it was the middle of summer with the heat on monday!) and everything is turning nice and green again. i've really been taking interest in plants more and more lately. i've always loved flowers but this is the first time i've actually taken the time to garden!

i got some incredible tomato plants at RAM this past weekend, so monday i fit a little gardening in. (if you take a closer look at the background of the picture, you an see a green tomato already hanging on the plant!) on the front porch of my house there are a few really deep planters on one side that i planted some tomato plants in. i decided to plant the tomatoes in there because that spot gets great sun and anything planted there always seems to flourish. i've also got a bunch of "baby" succulents that i'm sprouting. i've got quite a little nursery planted on my porch. it's so much fun to watch the progression of succulents as they grow too. this planter is just the perfect size to put small plant in! i've asked raglands, the restaurant next door to my shop, if they could save their XL cans that will be great for bigger plants. i think i may just have to make some of these for my RAM booth! :)

Recycled cans make perfect spring planters!

this week for crafty tuesdays we're making a super cute mosaic planter (or canister for whatever) from cans and vintage plates. i'm really looking forward to this project. it turned out really well, though it's hard to tell how fabulous this is from the picture above. (i took really pretty pictures this afternoon in hopes that the USB cord would turn up, but no luck... so had to turn to the trusty camera phone. boohoo.)

WHAT TO BRING:

- a can leftover from a canned good of some sort... (i will have about 10 on hand, so hopefully that will be enough... but you never know how many people may show up...)
-broken/old dishes if you'd like (i also purchased a lot of cool vintage ceramics to break up, so we should have enough... but if you have something you'd like to use, please bring)
-a hammer, if you have (i'll have a few on hand. everyone is good at sharing!)
-plus don't forget your beers, friends and $5! :)

we will be doing this project outside (the grout is super messy!), so you may want to dress accordingly. it could still be pretty hot at 6:30ish.

pretty spring napkin rings!

i found a super cool craft book from the 70's a few weeks ago and there are some great ideas in it. one is for napkin rings make with plaster bandages. unfortunately i have been hitting up the health and beauty section of numerous box stores and have yet to find it. i needed a substitute. i had some drywall tape (i think that's what it's called) in my stockpile of stuff and tried it out. voila!

a fusa-bowl!

it's 12:15am the day of craftacular tuesday. after wracking my brain for the past week trying to figure out a pet craft that i promised josh, i decided we would make a multi purpose bowl. this project can double as a super cool collapsible and reusable pet water bowl (for the fur friends) or make a few in different sizes and shapes and use as cool decorative containers.

last night the sample i mocked up didn't really turn out as i'd imagined. with some adjustments to the pattern, i tried again this afternoon. i'd planned to use recycled raincoats and vinyl materials, but the sides were too flimsy. and it kept leaking. no good.

then earlier this evening i was working on another project and it came to me... i would make fused plastic fabric (out of recycled grocery bags) and then sew the bowl from that. the layers of plastic made the walls of the bowl strong, while still being lightweight and pliable. i really think it turned out great... unfortunately, there is no picture. it's another case of the missing USB cord! sorry! (i think the cord is in my car but it's too dark to really see, so hopefully i will find it in the morning and be able to post the picture for you!)

i swore i wasn't going to teach the secrets of making this necklace because i didn't want everyone copying my creations. but due to crafters block this week and the fact that this is a really cool necklace to put together, i thought tonight would be a great night to make this.

my life has been pretty chaotic lately now that i've added RAM to my already overflowing plate of commitments. my house is an explosion of craft madness and i've been using every second of free (wait, nothing in life is free right?!?) time to make make make. the first two weeks of the arts market have been really great though and i'm so happy that i'm able to get in on the ground floor of an amazing addition to this city!

sorry there is no picture for tonight, (hence the picture of my dining room chaos above) but craftacular tuesday is still on for tonight, 6:30-8:30p! we're making super cool shrinky dinks tonight! this is one you definitely don't want to miss!

a wedding, the arts market and a t-bag craft tomorrow for tomorrow night!

the past few weeks have been crazy busy! i did a wedding 2 weekends ago. it turned out really nicely. the bride picked yellow and green as her colors and that allowed me to use some of my favorites stems on the tables! i love the mix and match look and we did an assortment of green and yellow vases on the tables along with real granny smith apples as the candle holders. lemons and limes were sliced and put into clear vases. it was so colorful!

her bouquet (pictured above) was traditional with a modern twist. i used a delicate combination of hydrangeas, mini calla lilies, and jade roses.

this past weekend, for those of you that don't know, was the opening day of the Riverside Arts Market. if you didn't come down to RAM, you really missed out on a truly historic day in du-val. it was amazing! an incredible turnout... 40,000!!! the crowd was pleasant, positive and 100% energizing. the crafty crew and i have a booth and hopefully will every week till december 19th (it closes till the following april). unfortunately, during the madness of opening day setup (and the fact that it was too early to be up for someone who drank too much and stayed out past her curfew the night before) i forgot to get my camera. urgh. next week i'll post some photos of how cute the booth turned out! our collective is appropriately named "the makers of things" and offers quite a variety of goodies! thanks to all my lovely, crafty friends for their help, support, and enthusiasm. you guys are awesome!

i've also been a non stop maker this week trying to build up some stock for the booth. i've made pillows, fabric collage necklaces, funky headbands and bobby pins, rings and earrings, cute vintage fabric cloches, and funky kids tees. i sold a little of everything but the t-shirts were clearly the hottest seller of the day. today i was back at it, rebuilding my inventory. i'm exhausted but have a few more things left to sew tonight... then maybe a little relaxation.

can i just say, i looooooooove my crafty club!!! seriously, that's what craftacular tuesdays have become... we ARE the 'crafty club'. it's a super fun group of people from different places, different backgrounds and of all ages. the fact that we all make things is what brings us together. i love hearing about everyone's ideas and seeing the finished projects.

and here are some accessories i did last night in preparation for RAM. i rarely ever like stuff i make THIS much. i don't know if it's because it's so fun to find the materials, figure out what to put together and start sewing to watch the necklace com to life or the fact that the finished product is so interesting and different from anything else i've seen.

and i'm going to have kids tees available at my booth as well. my son is wearing the vintage tie tee today... so handsome!

i really can't wait for the market! it's going to be great!

i'm just sitting down to take a break from making tomorrow nights craft to blog about it. i'm also trying to stockpile some inventory not only for anomaly, but also for RAM which is less than 2 weeks away!!!

tomorrow nights project consists of flat backed glass marbles that can usually be found in the floral section at your favorite craft store. this may not be very cute as filler in a vase, but you can make some really great accessories with them. i've made bracelets, earrings, pendants and even fridge magnets before! this week at craftacular tuesday we're making earrings. (and for all you gents, a tie tac or a lapel pin)

for this project i'm recycling an old obey catalog. shepard has the best prints and they really show up well underneath the marble. i have really fallen in love with this line. not only is his 'medium is the message' agenda such an interesting study in human nature but the clothing itself has really progressed in terms of great fit, style and detail! it's so much more than screen printed "OBEY" tees now! flipping back through the catalog now makes me excited because we should be receiving a new shipment sometime next week! yay!

i really hope to see you all tomorrow (6:30-8:30p) night for a fun night of creativity and fun with friends.

maybe it's my subconscious telling me to chow on a big fat burger (though i highly doubt it) but i had the urge to make some tiny, cutesy food charms today. the inspiration for this project came from a faux cupcake i saw at my friend marisa's house... speaking of marisa, you can see some INCREDIBLE pictures from that saturday taken my friend jeanne, who happens to be the most amazing photographer in duval!!! (and check out the flowers, compliments of moi!) although stressful, it was an absolutely wonderful day and it couldn't have been for two better people!!!

so, you want to get crafty? come to anomaly and get craftacular tomorrow (tuesday, 3/3) night. same time, (6:30-8:30), same place (the workshop @ anomaly). make new friends AND make adorable charms out of polymer clay! what more could you want for a tuesday night??? and as usual, we'll be hitting up a 5 points pub for a little crafterpartying!

these charms were SO much fun to make and i was really happy with how they turned out! i splurged this week and bought a craft oven so we now have a heat source for doing other projects. i've actually been wanting to do shrink art for a while, so i'm glad i invested in a craft oven!

the little birdy on the branch (pictured to the left) is my favorite one, but i think it's a little too delicate to wear as a necklace. or i could always enjoy it till it breaks. and please, pardon the white spots on this picture... it's the mod podge drying. the wondrous, multi purpose mod podge. it's elizabeth favorite... just watch the crafty video i posted last week below!

i just had to share with you... i got some really cool vintage plastic flowers at a bead show i went to over the weekend. i was so excited to get home and try out making something with these interesting bits. i ended up using wire and weaving all the flowers together. i cut a piece of felt to fit over the wire on the back of the piece so it isn't itchy against your skin. then i strung in on some thin silver chain. love.

i also purchased some really incredible handmade pendants from green girl studios. she and her husband cast these amazing pewter pendants from her original art in asheville, NC. i love creative people. here's just a few of the ones i purchased. i got about 20 pieces, so be on the lookout for cool jewels at anomaly!

my dear friend marisa is getting married this saturday and i'm so excited because i have the honor of doing her flowers. i've got to put the flower order in tomorrow and so over the weekend i purchased some of the flowers i'd be using so i could play around with them a little and figure out the quantity i'll need for everything.

this is a union of two super creative people and there are going to be so many amazing details that marisa and levi are going to surprise their guests with. check out their wedding website too. the invitation will take your breath away. so cool.

and the bridesmaids bouquets are simple and dainty. i'm using carnations because they are cost effective and make a nice statement when bunched together. then the wax flowers, gerbera daisies and hypercium mixed in reminds me of an assortment picked out of a spring garden. the nuptials are taking place outside under a huge oak tree at the oldest house in st. augustine. the earthy feel of the berries and wax flower give it a more casual look.

what i'm referring to actually is spider moss. i discovered it at the fernandina farmers mar ket this past saturday. first of all, if you've never been, i highly suggest making the quick trip up I-95. it's only about 35 minutes north of downtown and you can spend the day shopping the different antique shops and grab a bite at a local eatery.

well back to the spider moss. i discovered it and now i love it.

i was searching through the internet this morning for inspiration for the next craftacular project and came across this tutorial on another blog. you can find it HERE! we won't be doing this one because it's too in depth to do on a tuesday night, but maybe this will encourage you to try it at home. i LOVE how the necklaces turned out! simply wonderful.

we will be making paper beads on tuesday, but not like this. stay tuned.

a 'self portrait' and a hippie headband

on sunday i got to the store at 6:30am. there was a production crew waiting for me. i was supposed to be there at 6:00 but somehow mysteriously overslept?!?! a scene for a movie was shot at anomaly and i was excited to be a part of the locally produced film! it's called 'self portrait' and it's about this up and coming artist who's girlfriend wants him to do art so he can make money but he meets another woman who wants him to follow his heart and do the art he loves. from what i saw of the film (all of about 5 total minutes, if that) it seems to be an interesting story and i'm anxious to see how it turns out.

i really applaud the director, anthony kilburn, and his fiance, who are financing the whole thing themselves! a little after 1pm on sunday after everyone had cleared out of the store, i had a chance to chat with the 2 of them about their endeavor. i told them how great it was that they were staying in jacksonville to do something like this instead of seeking out success in another "bigger" (ie: LA, NYC) city. they both told me that they had definitely talked about moving and producing it in said cities, but finally decided to keep it local. then we all talked about how much we loved the energy going on in the creative community here. jacksonville is rockin and if you don't think so then go somewhere else. we don't need your negative energy here. i'm super pumped that this movie is happening locally and really honored to be a part of it! i guess being an entrepreneur myself, i have alot of respect for people that put themselves out there. i hope they have good luck with the film. it should be premiering sometime at artwalk this fall... or so i've heard.

i know some people think that flowers are a waste and what's the point because they are going to die anyway. but then what's the point of us living if we're going to die anyway? enjoy it for what it is. happiness in a vase. i love having fresh flowers around my house but haven't really been splurging on little extras like that lately. in a way it makes it all the more special when i see them sitting on my counter. flowers make me smile. here are some recent arrangements i put together for a bride.

i've always dabbled with doing wedding flowers. i would do friends or friends of a friends weddings but wasn't really seeking out business. over the past year i've had the opportunity to get quite a few more jobs and i'm really enjoying it! with spring just around the corner love is lingering in the air. if you know of someone looking for unique and affordable floral design, please pass my name along to them!

another great night in 5 points.

last night was the first friday of the month. that means party in 5 points! woohoo! if you missed it, you missed out on a really great time! our featured artist for february is herb elphick. he has a really cool street style with lots of bold colors. if you were feeling festive you could have gotten your pretty face painted up all fancy. thank you debra for coming!!!

outside we had tough junkie and other mc's battling it out in front of anomaly and making people shake their bootys with some sick beats! you guys were amazing and thanks to herb for hooking that up! i don't know how they come up with what comes out of their mouth. it's incredible! if you want to check out more make sure to go to TSI on feb. 20th for the ultimate mc battle!

you could've even huddled up by the urban campfire to stay warm or roast a marshmallow.

either way, you would've had a great time and you could've gotten some free beer like this guy... i think he should be the new poster child for anomaly during this time of economic hardship.

vegan tastiness.

every wednesday night is LOST night at our house. we have my sister over and usually our friend allison who is practically a sister too. we cook a tasty dinner and then cozy up on the couch for some good old fashioned tv time!

one of my new years resolutions was to cook vegan 3x a week. i have to applaud myself because i'm really doing a good job of sticking to that. the hardest part being vegan for me is to give up cheese which is why i could never commit to a strict vegan diet.

i love love love 101cookbooks.com. heidi, who writes this blog, is a vegetarian (as am i) and she often cooks vegan, which i love doing too. amanda and allison are both vegans so last night for dinner i whipped up some vegan delights. for dinner i used a recipe from one of heidi's that i've been dying to try for a long time... orange pan glazed temeph. yuuummmmm! she suggested serving it with kale and wheat berries but i served it with broccoli, brown rice and vegan spring rolls. the tempeh was soooo tasty and full of flavor but for some reason, when it cooked, the tempeh soaked all the sauce up and there wasn't alot to put over the top of the rice/broccoli. other than that, it was delicious and i will definitely be cooking this again. next time though, i'm going to throw a little flour in to see if that will thicken up the mixture and prevent the sauce from getting soaked up by the tempeh.

since i took care of dinner, allison brought over stuff to make dessert. this was our favorite part. vegan oreo (yep, oreos are vegan!) milkshakes... she used vanilla soy ice cream, vanilla soy milk and a whole lotta oreos. tasty.

so, go on 101cookbooks and check out some tasty recipes. it's easy to be healthy when it tastes so damn good.

in keeping with the owl theme this week... i made a cute project with my son a few days ago. he found a a big fat pinecone at the park on monday that was begging to be used in a project. so, when we got home we put that thing to use.

all you need is:

brown, black, white and orange construction paper
feathers (can get a a craft store, we used brown/black)
glue stick
hot glue (obviously parents, you do this part...)
scissors
a pinecone of choice

first cut out all the pieces to build your owl. this is a great lesson in shapes for your little one. all the pieces are very simple. you need to cut two ovals (for the wings) from the brown paper, an orange triangle (for the beak), two white circles for the eyes (you can also use googly eyes, but i didn't have any around... or couldn't find them... ha ha.), and two black smaller circles for the inside of the eyes.

plug in the hot glue gun (preferably away from your child). now take the glue stick (or have your child do this part) and cover the brown ovals. have your little one glue on feathers to the brown ovals for the wings. we were very generous with the feathers for ours.

then glue the black circles in the middle of the white circles for the eyes. for the beak, you can gently fold the triangle in half length wise to shape it a little if you'd like.

now all you have to do is glue the pieces on. i simply folded a small part of the top of each wing and glued each one to the side of the pinecone. then the eyes, beak and that's it! what a fun, simple and cheap project.

tell the one you love how 'tweet' he/she is with a birdy card! this one is my favorite! i got the cute printed card from the $1 store in a pack of 8 for a buck! (i know, so cute!!!) and then used solid card stock to build the picture. i have drawn out all the patterns, and if my scanner is working, i will post the patterns later so you can try this at home. i'm heading to the store shortly with a lot on my to do list, so we'll what the day brings.

another take is to make a little tag instead of a card. fill a cool jar (i went with a flea market find from the other day!) with tasty candies and special treats and tie the tag around the top. what a cute lil' summin' for someone special. i'd already stamped this one, but after the fact i thought of putting 'a special tweet just for you' on it... oh well there's always next time.

i was feeling inspired to make more little paper patchwork animals last night. i did a little mouse stamped with "be my big cheese please"... i know... i know... so dorky, but isn't that what valentine's day is all about.

i've got so many ideas to write about this week... i'm going to post a kid craft... yesterday after the park, my son and i made a cute owl out of a pine cone. pics and instructions to come! yay!

and can i just say, 3 cheers for multiple posts in a week! you better watch out... there's loads more where this came from. i don't know where all this blogging energy is coming from, but i love it.

i just have to share some amazing flea market finds from my adventures today. i love flea markets and i really love scavenging for treasures... broken jewelry, rusty chairs and vintage sheets just waiting for me to take home!

i used to work every single sunday and it sucked. i pretty much work every saturday already and then giving up my sunday too... i needed to regain some sanity so i haven't been working sundays for the past few weeks. it's so nice to be able to go out and do things... especially with the weather like it was today. i took full advantage of a sunday off and headed to the flea market! it's great for finding cool stuff but also the people watching... you never know what you're going to see.

i scored...

a handstitched wall hanging, with vintage frame. $2. the details and craftsmanship are absolutely incredible! it made me wonder if in 40 years someone would be buying my crafts at a flea market. :)

a ball mason jar. $1. these are pretty easy to find, but there is something about the charm of a mason jar full of flowers.
a lion counter. $1. this is so freaking cute and i've never seen anything like it! the middle turns and the number counts up to 31 so you can keep track of the days of the month. i got it for my son to use to practice his counting.
a super fun pair of vintage shoes. $3. the print is so bright and springy and they fit perfectly. (well, maybe a little snug but we suffer for fashion, right?)
and the score of the day... $3. a set of 4 vintage craft books from 1974. it's the LeeWards Illustrated Library of Arts and Crafts. sure to pull from for inspiration for future craft nights. most excellent. the cover art is wonderful!
2 baskets of strawberries and a bunch of cilantro. $4. fresh and delicious.

women's liberation button and broken earring. 50 cents each. the button is SO cool. i love it because buying it today made me think about the person that wore it during the feminist movement. this button was worn by someone with the passion and drive to fight for something she (or he?!?) believed in. but i bought it today, to inspire me to never forget what drive and passion can do. although there's still a long way to go, we live in an age where an african american is now the president! this country has really evolved and gives me hope for future generations

so sorry about last week. i was super sick and didn't get out of bed for practically 24 hours! so i apologize if any of you came out to a cancelled craft night!!! that being said, we're back in business tomorrow night with an all new, super cute craft!

some of our regulars were nice enough to donate phone wire that is so much fun to craft with! (thanks sandra and gail!!!) this tuesday we're painting, then adorning wooden picture frames with wire flowers and buttons!

not to get all mushy on everyone, but i just have to say that i've met some really amazing people at craftacular and i'm so thankful for all the support you have all shown for this! you all are the ones that inspire me at times, when i'm feeling a little less than enthused, to keep going. you guys make me laugh and inspire me. plus i love the craft community we're building! i really can't thank you enough for your continued support!

i'd really love to start having a few more classes a week. i've had lots of requests for specific areas. we'll see where 2009 takes us. i've got so many ideas and things i'd like to do this year, i just need to get on it!!!

and for all of you that are interetsed in selling your wares, you should check out RAM. it's going to be a phenomenal event held every saturday right on the river in riverside!

so much for my new years resolution of posting more than once a week! i guess i've still got time to work on it though... it is only january. i've also had requests for tutorials, so i may work on that too.

my friend (and fellow craft night attendee) elizabeth recently returned from a trip to israel and brought me this beautiful wire ball necklace. i wear it so much that i thought we should make them for craft night. these would make the prettiest gifts for friends. this necklace is on a long ball chain but we will be putting ours on satin cording. (you can always go out and purchase a different chain from a craft store if you'd like.) you also have the option of turning it into earrings and i will have the pieces tomorrow night to do that. hope to see you at anomaly! 6:30-8:30. modern ornaments

with december upon us, everyone is dusting off last years holiday decorations from the attic, i wanted to spice up my decor with some new garland. tuesday night we're making garland and/or ornaments out of either recycled magazines or fun holiday papers. you can take your pick. the way you piece together these balls is by cutting out circles and folding the edges in and then gluing the edges to other pieces. (picture coming soon...) it's simple, fun and an ornament would be a nice present for a friend as well.

mine looks totally different from the picture, but it turned out really cute. i just took the idea and went with it.

One person showed up to craft tonight but she decided not to stay, as nobody else showed... Girls, I'll give you a break, I know everyone has a busy schedule right now... And it's my fault too. I've been slack on the promoting lately.

Needless to say, it was actually a blessing in disguise... I had to read for Sociology and post for my Business law class and so I was able to come home and get that done.

We're doing the same craft again next week but I will post a new picture with the block I made. It turned out really well! I'm excited! AND I already have the craft for the next week too... duct tape wallets!

PS Just wanted to give Cathy a shout out and tell her thank you for the super cool birdcage she dropped off at the store... I mentioned that I wanted some for a window display and she remembered. It was so thoughtful! Make sure to check the window soon... I'm excited! THANKS CATHY!

i will admit it... i've been slack this week in coming up with a project for tomorrow night. this whole tropical storm thing really threw me off track. plus i had a kids birthday party to go to saturday night, i worked on sunday and i started school this morning... so, not making excuses but i'm just saying...

this means tomorrow night will be our first every... Crafty Night Surprise... oooohhh... isn't that fun?!?! actually, i've narrowed it down to 1 of 2 projects... we may do something with felt again (sorry you crafters from last week... there's a lot left...) like a felt flower necklace or hair clip OR make shrinky dink charms... the only problem with the latter is that i don't have a toaster oven.... does anyone have one i can borrow??? e-mail me at emily(at)anomalyfivepoints(dotcom) if you do.... otherwise... felt flowers here we come.

The felting fun of Tuesday night was one of the most laid back classes yet! The crowd was 20-somethings only and we all had a great time drinking and laughing at each others' "learning curve"!!! (names shall remain undisclosed... ha ha!) we had 4 new faces and 2 regulars + me with made for a great group! We learned how to blanket stitch but some decided to march to the beat of a different stitch and make up her own! That's what it's all about... no rules... no bosses... just free thinking creative people coming together! One crafter was so proud that she actually finished a whole project in one evening! She told the group of all the half finished projects around her room. That made us start thinking and another suggested we should have a craft night where you bring an unfinished craft and then with the inspiration from others, finish it at craft night. Thank you to all who came out and made it one of my favorite nights yet! If the storm is really bad tomorrow and I don't end up opening the store, I'm going to try to make the best of it and have a Rainy Crafty Day! We will see which way Fay goes! FELT FUN --- tuesday night!

so i've had major crafters-block this week in thinking of a project for this tuesday night. then yesterday i was looking at my ugly blackberry case that came with my phone and thought that something cute to keep it scratch free would be the perfect thing to make this week!!! so come tuesday night and make a phone or IPOD holder! this is a sewing project in which we will be learning how to blanket stitch.

this afternoon i whipped up a sample and was quite pleased with what i came up with! the pouch in the picture doesn't have a velcro closure, but i intend on adding one. i'm envisioning tuesday night (with amstel light in hand) already... cute pouches everywhere adrorned with birdies, lollipop trees, flowers and more! i can't wait to see the creations!

one man's trash is another man's craft

yet another rainy evening, but still a lovely night for crafting! i really enjoyed tonights project and know all the reclaimed bottles will enjoy new lives as vases in homes! each bottle had such a unique look because of the different fabrics/combinations each crafter used. i love seeing and hearing new ideas being bounced around the room by everyone. and it's kind of crazy but in a weird way i'm a little rejuvenated by it all. even though it's almost 10PM and i just got home, ate a bowl of cereal and sat down to upload pictures/write about tonight, it's still really fun and i'm enjoying meeting so many creative people! thanks to all who've come to support our craft night! it's so much fun!

the vases turned out beautifully! oh and i also wanted to thank everyone who came this evening not only for helping but also for cleaning up too! it really helps me close up the store faster! thank you!

here's some crafty google thought up... have you heard about blackle.com? my cool friends jimmy and genora told me about it a couple of weeks ago. anyway, if you go to blackle.com instead of google.com you will save energy because the screen is black when you do the search. don't worry, it's the exact same search engine as google, so if you are partial to that search engine, it will give you the same results. switch your homepage now... what a great and simple way to conserve energy!

RECYCLED BOTTLE VASE: HOW-TO

If you'd like to turn a glass bottle into a cute vase here's what you need to do...

gather up your supplies. you will need:

a glue gun and glue sticks
various ribbon, yarn, and/or old fabric
glass bottle(s) *you can use plastic but glass is heavier and more sturdy.
optional: buttons/beads, etc... to embellish if you'd like.

if you are using fabric to wrap the bottle, you will want to cut it into long strips. you can choose how wide you want the strips to be, thinner vs. thicker will give the vase a different look. this project is all about experimenting with materials and color. get a little crazy...

now... start at the very top of the bottle (or base, either way works, i just started at the top.) and put some glue on your fabric and line it up flush with the lip of the bottle. glue it down. now, slowly begin wrapping your material around the vase, stopping every 5 or so wraps and putting a dot of glue down to keep the fabric from slipping. the most challenging part of this project is wrapping the curve where the neck of the bottle widens. you may need to use more glue here and wrap a few layers to get all the glass to cover.

**here are a couple bottles partially wrapped. if you leave some glass showing, it's easier to cover up with another layer. you can't mess this up!

continue wrapping until the whole bottle is covered. when finished, glue down the last bit of the fabric and trim around the bottom, if necessary. some crafters added buttons, etc... to jazz it up a little more. the sky's the limit!

HINT:
this project looks really cute if you make a set of three in different shapes and sizes. makes a nice little bottle collection on a shelf. :)

Come make a lovely vase out of a recycled bottle this Tuesday at Anomaly! I used a champagne bottle but you could really use ANY TYPE of bottle you'd like. A short vase (from a beer bottle) would be really cute. A set of 3 on a shelf would be even cuter! We will be wrapping the bottle in ribbon, strips of vintage fabric, yarn, etc...

Despite the rainy evening...

We had another Craftacular night Tuesday! YAY!!! We have had 2 classes in a row where not 1 but 2 tables were full! I need to get some more chairs, but hey, that's a great problem to have! I love seeing crafters out in full force and this group was as diverse as ever! Everyone that showed up was super cool and diverse, but when has it not been? We had a great grandmother, a boyfriend and

girlfriend, a 9 year old (she's a repeat!) and her cool aunt, among many others! I just can't tell you how much I appreciate all the support our craft night has been getting. It's so much fun to get together with new people and all share one common interest... making something! And it's such a great place to bounce ideas off of each other!

One of my favorite parts of the evening was when, at one point, everyone concentrating on their projects so much that the room was silent. All in all it was a great evening and making a fabic necklace is so fun and super easy.

so, i know... you are sitting in your desk at work, reading this and wishing you could make one too!!! well you can and here's how...

all you need is:

scissors
assorted wooden beads or marbles (we even recycled some beads from broken necklaces) it doesn't matter what they look like b/c they will be covered.
a 1-2 in. wide strip of a fabric of your choice... thicker fabrics make chunkier knots. (we were measuring the length of the fabric by stretching out our arms and cutting it as wide as our "wingspan"... i'm so technical!)
*a little tip... i like ripping the fabric instead of cutting to make it look frayed. it give the necklaces a nice touch. just cut a slit to start the fabric and then pull!

once you get your strip of fabric ready, you simply fold it in half (to find the middle) and make a knot about an inch to the left or right of the mid point. it's easier to start in the middle and work your way out. place your bead as close to the knot as possible and wrap the fabric around it. then tie another knot. make sure your knot is as close as possible to the bead to keep it secure. repeat until you like how your necklace looks. i kept mine long and tie the two ends together to finish it off. that way, it just slips over my head for an instant accessory!

REMEMBER: a great thing about this project is you CAN NOT mess this it up! the look of it is really organic so if you run out of fabric, just knot more onto each end. and if you want to get really crazy you can even mix it up a bit and add a different print/color! JUST HAVE FUN! :)

YAY! Another great turnout at craft night! It's really so much fun every week to meet so many different people! The stencil tote turned out to be a hit and I even got to stencil a cute tee for my friends 3 year old daughter and one for my son too!

I supplied natural colored totes for all the crafters and then we made stencils by cutting the negative space out of animal silhouettes. It's a really simple craft that can double as eco-chic gift wrap. Wrapping a present in this reusable tote is sure to delight the recipient!

It makes it a great alternative to disposable gift bags and can then be used as a beach, grocery or library tote.

I've been crafting alot this week. I've been working on a knitting project that I finished last night. It's a mixed fabric neck warmer made from recycled materials. I cut vintage lace and a t-shirt into strips, tied the ends together and then knitted it back together. I will post a picture of the finished project if I remember.

It was really rainy all day at the store today, so that means it was totally DEAD. I took advantage of a little free time and made a few purses and a custom baby sling. I've been obsessing over some vintage fabrics that I finally got to use today. My sewing machine has been out of comission for about a month but she's repaired and back in business.

With the growing interest in craft night I am happy to lauch my new blog "If you're crafty and you know it..." in conjunction with Craftacular Tuesdays at Anomaly! I will be posting past projects, info for upcoming projects and anything else that interests or inspires me.

This past Tuesday night we made the most adorable fabric and ribbon rosettes! We used scraps of fabric, ribbon and lace, beads from broken necklaces, and vintage buttons galore!

The turnout was great... 13 people came, not including myself! I'm starting to get worried that I may have to have signups before hand so I will know how many to expect! We ran out of chairs this week! All different ages and backgrounds were there and I really enjoy that because it always keeps the conversation interesting.

Note to Self: Must remember name tags next week as all these new names are hard to remember!!! :)

Craft of the Week: Ribbon Rosettes

Everyone's flowers turned out so adorable and I love the twist each person took on this to really bring her personality and style into the project. (Want to learn how to make this cuteness? I am working on the tutorial for this and it will be up soon!)
